As with any software, it may adapt it’s own terminology or jargon. The same is true of eduTrac SIS. Knowing the terms and understanding their use will help the community best communicate with each other. This purpose of this article is to introduce you to the terminology used in eduTrac SIS.

What’s in a Name?

Before getting to the terminology used in eduTrac SIS, first let’s clear up the name of the software in question. The etymology of the first part of the software’s name is derived from the words education and track, while also adding the well known educational phrase, student information system shortened to SIS.

The reason for its name was to make it clear as to its purpose. Educational institutions use student information systems in order to house their information as well as to track student progress and other data.

Spelling and Use

It may seem trite to insist on the proper spelling and use of the software’s name but it is important. Why? It not only helps establish it’s reputation, but it also helps to not get it confused with some other software which may be similarly named but with a different spelling and purpose. Below is the proper spelling of the official name and the short names and their use.


  1. eduTrac SIS – This is the official name of the software. Please note the spelling and capitalization of ‘e’, ‘T’ and ‘SIS’.
  2. etSIS – You may also refer to the software by this short name. With the short name, the capitalization of the ‘t’ is not necessary.
  3. etsis – This short name should only be used in plugins or other code as a prefix for functions (i.e. function etsis_get_first_name {}). Or it can be in all caps if used to prefix a constant (i.e. define( ‘ETSIS_APP_DIR’, BASE_PATH . ‘app’ . DS))


The term screen is used synonymous with page. They are referred to as screens instead of pages because the majority of them are navigable by the use of an acronym.

Lookup Screens

Even though they use the word Search (which will be fixed) may appear on those screens, they are properly termed ‘Lookup Screens‘. These screens allow you to lookup/search for the information you need.


A course in eduTrac SIS mainly refers to the template that is built using the CRSE screen. However, you could use the term course and course section interchangeably when referencing a student depending on the context and conversation.

Course Section / Section

A course section is what’s created from a course as well as what students are registered into. Think of course as the parent, and course sections as the children. Course section(s) can also be referred to by the short name section / sections.

Stu Acad Cred

This term is short for student academic credits and refers a bucket of where all the student academic history is found. It includes attempted credits, completed credits, grades, grade points, and more.

Stu Term

Refers to the terms for which a student was registered.


Short name for myeduTrac SIS self service portal.

Save Query

Refers to the act of creating a query for saving.

Saved Query

Refers to queries that have already been created and saved.

Super Admin

Refers to the first account that was created when eduTrac SIS was installed. The super admin has full power over the system and how it is set up.


Refers to the place where faculty and staff are only allowed access. Some may have permission to create courses, sections, programs, etc. or be granted inquiry only.
